Regions of Florida

Florida is too big for one forecast. The state splits into 7 regions, each with its own site — the same maps, the same live radar and the same climate record, scoped to the counties that actually share a sky. Every city in a region gets its own page underneath it.

The 7 Regions

Orlando
The City Beautiful · I-4 · The Space Coast
OPEN →
Orlando is the lightning capital of the United States, and the reason is geometry: the sea breezes come in from both coasts every summer afternoon and collide right over these counties. Add the hurricanes that cross the peninsula rather than stopping at the shore — Charley in 2004, Ian in 2022 — and inland Florida is not the safe option people assume.

Tampa Bay
The Bay · I-275 · The Gulf Coast
OPEN →
Tampa Bay is the surge problem everyone in emergency management names first: a shallow bay, a funnel shape, and three million people living a few feet above it. Helene and Milton made the point inside two weeks in 2024. The rest of the year it is the daily sea-breeze storms and the heat that comes off the Gulf.

The Florida Keys
The Conch Republic · US-1 · The Overseas Highway
OPEN →
One road in and one road out, nowhere more than a few feet above the water, and the warmest sea surface in the continental United States sitting on both sides of it. Evacuation here starts days earlier than anywhere else in Florida, and Irma in 2017 is why. Between storms it is the mildest winter in the country.

South Florida
Gold Coast · Southwest · The Keys
OPEN →
Two coasts, the Everglades in between, and the only true tropical climate in the continental United States. Sea breezes collide here almost every summer afternoon, and the hurricane season is never abstract.

Central Florida
I-4 Corridor · Tampa Bay · Space Coast
OPEN →
The lightning capital of the United States. Gulf and Atlantic sea breezes meet over the middle of the peninsula nearly every summer day, and the storms that result are the most frequent in the country.

North Florida
First Coast · Gainesville · Nature Coast
OPEN →
The part of Florida that gets a winter. Freezes reach the Suwannee Valley most years, nor'easters pile surf onto the First Coast, and the springs hold 72° all year regardless.

The Panhandle
Emerald Coast · Big Bend · Central Time
OPEN →
Florida's other time zone. The Emerald Coast takes the Gulf's worst landfalls, the Big Bend funnels the highest storm surge in the state, and winter here looks more like Alabama than Miami.
